MAINE COON

The Maine Coon is the oldest natural breed in North America and the official state cat of Maine, a creature of New England farmhouses and harborside lore, said by some to have descended from the longhaired cats Marie Antoinette dispatched across the Atlantic in anticipation of her own escape from Versailles. Whether legend or genealogy, the Maine Coon carries itself with the easy authority of a creature born to weather any winter.

The breed has appeared in everything from the Harry Potter films, where a Maine Coon played the role of Argus Filch's Mrs. Norris, to the apartments of Taylor Swift, whose Maine Coons Meredith and Olivia became some of the most photographed cats of the twenty-first century. Few breeds blend the rugged and the regal so effortlessly.
