CHIHUAHUA

The Chihuahua is the oldest breed in the Americas and the smallest dog in the world, descended from the Techichi, a sacred companion of the Toltec and the Aztec believed to guide the souls of the dead through the underworld. Named for the Mexican state where it was rediscovered in the 1850s, it carries more history in its tiny frame than dogs ten times its size.

No small dog has been more of a star. The Chihuahua became the face of a fast-food empire, stole every scene in Legally Blonde and Beverly Hills Chihuahua, and turned Paris Hilton's Tinkerbell into the original handbag dog of the century. It is the breed that proved presence has nothing to do with size.
