DALMATIAN

The Dalmatian is the breed of carriages and firehouses, of Renaissance frescoes and ancient Roman trade routes, a dog whose origins stretch back to the Adriatic coast and whose role has shifted across the centuries from coach companion to firehouse mascot to silver-screen icon. Few breeds wear history so visibly across their own skin.

Dodie Smith's novel and Disney's adaptation made the Dalmatian a household legend, but its glamour predates Hollywood by centuries. Glenn Close gave it gothic theatrics; the Bonaparte family rode behind teams of them; Louis XIV admired them.
