LABRADOR

The Labrador is not from Labrador. It comes from Newfoundland, where the St. John's water dog hauled fishing nets out of the North Atlantic in weather that would kill most breeds, and it was the Earl of Malmesbury who brought them to England in the nineteenth century and gave them the wrong name that stuck forever.

What followed is the most sustained love affair in the history of dogs. The Labrador held the position of most popular breed in America for thirty-one consecutive years, longer than any breed before or since, dethroned at last by the French Bulldog. It guides the blind, works the borders, sits beside presidents, and remains the dog most people picture when they simply think of a dog.
