AUSSIE

The Australian Shepherd is not Australian. It was bred in the American West, on the ranches of California and Colorado, and took its name from the Australian sheep it was set to herd. Everything about the misnomer suits a dog that has never cared much for the record: fast, tireless, and cleverer than most of the people it works for, it became the great cowboy dog of the twentieth century.

The Aussie built its fame in the rodeo ring and the Disney lot, starring in mid-century westerns and touring the country in travelling shows, spinning ropes and riding horseback. Today its blue merle coat and pale, sometimes ice-blue eyes have made it one of the most photographed breeds of the internet age, the athlete and the show-off of the herding world.
