POMERANIAN

The Pomeranian is the smallest surviving descendant of the Arctic sled dogs, named for Pomerania on the Baltic coast where it was first bred down from animals many times its size. Queen Victoria finished the job. In 1888 she returned from Florence with a Pomeranian named Marco who weighed twelve pounds, far below the standard of the day, and her taste for the smallest ones halved the size of the entire breed within her own lifetime. She asked for her Pomeranian Turi to be brought to her bedside as she died.

Mozart dedicated an aria to his Pomeranian Pimperl. Marie Antoinette kept one at Versailles. Two of the only three dogs to survive the Titanic were Pomeranians, carried into the lifeboats by owners who would not leave without them. A century later Boo became one of the most followed animals on earth, and Paris Hilton and Sharon Osbourne returned the breed to the role it had always played: the companion of the famous. Few dogs so small have left so long a trail through history.
